Morning Messages

Good Morning Second Graders,
Today is Friday, April 17, 2020.  It's National Haiku day!  A Haiku poem is about a moment or an object in nature.  This week in mindfulness you have been noticing the sun and the breeze.

A haiku poem has the structure of:
5 syllables in the first line
7 syllables in the second line
5 syllables in the last line

Here are two Haiku poems I wrote:

Our sun bright and strong
healing, helping, bright
Hopeful for its rise

Cold breeze on my face
waiting for it to blow by
chilly nose and cheeks

Spend some time outside finding an item in nature then you might write and illustrate a haiku about today.

Thank you for our zoom meeting yesterday!  It was better and it's so good to see your faces.  Please post in our google classroom stream today.

Our link today is activities related to Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22nd.

I care about you.
I miss you.
Be brave and be kind.
Love,
Mrs. Belisle

Today is Wednesday, April 15, 2020.  It's sunny!  Hooray!

Here's a daily poem for you to enjoy.  We love erasers in our class, they help us take risks and try, knowing it's okay to make mistakes.

Today, as a writer, you get to write about a character you create and make a setting (which is where a story takes place). You can write your story in a google doc.  You can also write it in your word study, reader's or your own notebook.   You can try some ideas using this website.  www.mystorybook.com   if you'd like.

  • please post a comment in the google classroom stream

I'm enjoying have conversations with all of you with phone calls, emails, and journals!

Let's do some thinking on Thursday about this picture of an Othello board!
What do you notice?
What math questions can you ask and answer about this picture?
You are a mathematician when you wonder and ask questions.  What else might you notice today that has patterns or makes you wonder about how many, how much?

Here is a link to play some tabletop games, tic tac toe, checkers and dots, and boxes.  They remind me of our time at snackcess!

Good Morning Second Graders,
Today is Friday, April 3, 2020.  Today is National Find a Rainbow Day!  I think today, with the rain, we might find a rainbow in the sky, we could find a rainbow someone has made and put in their window, or you could set up a glass of water as we did with Mystery Doug and (when) the sun shines through the window you can try to create your own rainbow! How else might you find a rainbow today?

I've put our blog link as our online resource today.  I'll read chapter 5 of Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne today.  The last 5 chapters will be next week.  You can watch them by going onto the blog and along the top, there is a tab titled read aloud.  Then you can click the link of the chapter.   What would you like me to read aloud next?

Do you create and/or solve riddles?  Here's one to try:
You see me in the air
But I am not a kite
I am what's created
When water refracts light

Want to email me with a riddle and I'll put them on our blog for all of us to try and solve?
I care about you.
Be brave and be kind,
Love,
Mrs. Belisle

Good Morning Second Graders,
Today is Thursday, April 2, 2020.

Today is National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day and National Autism Awareness Day! Here are some facts about both days: Julia Davis Chandler put peanut butter and jelly together in a Boston magazine in 1901. The word autism was first used in 1911 by Eugen Bleuler.  How far apart are those two dates?  How many years before now?

I want to thank all of you for working so hard and being wonderful people.  I believe in you.  I believe in us.

Be brave and be kind,
Love,

Mrs. Belisle

Good Morning Second Graders,
Today is Wednesday, April 1, 2020.  Welcome to April Hope Day!  Today is a day to celebrate hope and kindness and making someone's day a little better.  People all around the USA and all around the world are decorating their windows with rainbows, hearts and teddy bears as a sign of hope, to thank health care workers and let people know that walk by that "everything will be okay".   What do you think you might put in your window?  If you take a walk today, I'm wondering how many signs of hope you might see?

I'll share what I make to put in our window in tomorrow's message.
Be brave and be kind,
Love,
Mrs. Belisle

Good Morning Second Graders,
Today is Tuesday, March 31, 2020.

The letter of the day at our house is T.  Each person is going to do something with the letter T today.  I'm wearing a turtleneck and I will make tea and toast.  What might you do today that will make you smile?

Today's gratefulness task is to finish the sentence
"Today I am grateful for _______."  My sentence will be:  Today I am grateful for you, each one of you.
I hope you have a terrific Tuesday,
Be brave and be kind,
Love,
Mrs. Belisle

Today's online resource is word games.

Kid President about Heroes:

Good Afternoon Second Graders,
I've done a lot of learning recently.  You may already know, but in case you do not, our Governor has announced that the schools in Vermont will be closed for the rest of the school year.  Even though we won't be learning in the same classroom, I'll be connecting with you in lots of creative ways.  I want you to know that you are important and I miss seeing you in person.

I have started a new tab for reading aloud on my blog that will begin next week.  I also will email you to set up a planned phone call or email time weekly, if that works for your family.

We will continue to learn together.

You'll receive a new packet of lesson plans on Monday from the bus.

I hope you have a good weekend.
Love,

Mrs. Belisle

Good Morning Second Graders,

Today is Friday, March 27, 2020.

I am writing this message to you today to share that we will continue our learning from home. I am confident in us as a class, as a community, and as people. I will be getting more information today about what our learning will look like.  So, you will get two messages today.

I've shared many true Jen Belisle stories.  Some have been about students I've had who are adults now.  They still know that "once you're mine, you're always mine."  We will continue to learn together and I'll continue to be your teacher.

We are brave.  We are kind.  We do our best.  I'm proud of each of you, parents included.
Love,
Mrs. Belisle

Here is your daily online resource, it's activities for outside.  I thought it might be fun and helpful throughout the weekend, it's for all ages!

Good Morning Second Graders,
Today is Thursday, March 26, 2020.
As I look out my window, I'm wondering, is the snow in my yard exactly half, less than half or more than half? Remember our flags from number corner?  Maybe you could look around and find examples of things that are exactly half today (has two equal parts).

Here is a picture of Apollo (green harness) and Zephyr (blue harness).  I'll write a story about them to share with you tomorrow.  What will you write about today?
I miss you all,
Love,
Mrs. Belisle
Here's your daily online resource.  Enjoy some movement, singing and smiling today.

Good Morning Second Graders,
Today is Wednesday, March 25, 2020.  I wonder if the sap from the maple trees is flowing today?  The snow is melting quickly.
I'm excited to hear what you are doing and which activities you like so far.  Please send me an email with some of your successes and questions.
Here is a picture of what our son Colin drew after watching the video links I've attached below.
I miss you all,
Mrs. Belisle
