Life Science in action

During the month of May, we were visited by numerous guest speakers and experts to enhance our learning experiences with our life science unit.  Jen Savas kicked off our journey with her personal experience as a beekeeper!  She brought ALL second graders a sample of honey from her beehive.  We felt very grateful, especially after learning that a honeybee creates 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in its entire life.

Next, we were visited by Eric von Wettberg, Colin's Dad.  He is a botanist at UVM.  He taught us about the parts, importance, and beauty of each flower.  We learned about clovers, nodules and how protein and sugar are created in our plants.  We are surrounded by science, from the plants in our environment to the ones we eat.

We welcomed a teacher from the Flynn Theater named Hanna.  She led us in an artistic, dramatic, theatrical experience using the book, The Tiny Seed, by Eric Carle.  We learned to use our bodies to represent the plant life cycle, create sound effects about each season in an orchestral format and work cooperatively to experience each other's expression in a thoughtful way.

We so appreciate the time and expertise of Mrs. Knoth and Mrs. Almassalkhi who taught us about the life cycle of rotting logs and their critical role in our environment.  We experienced rotting logs up close and even found out that each rotting log is a habitat for some creatures that we discovered!

We visited the UVM Horticulture Farm!  What an amazing place, right here in South Burlington!  We learned first hand about the value of pollinators, their vital role in our world and how they work so hard.

Farm to School with our new teachers Kayli and Sophie!  We learned and shared all that we knew about plants.  We were able to share our knowledge of L.A.W.N.S, light, air, water, nutrients, and space.  We tasted the peapod plant, identified it's parts and used our senses in a mindful way to appreciate the plant as food.

Gerry Schneider from the Vermont Entomological Society visited our class on Friday.  We learned all about butterflies, moths, and bats.  We created T-shirts to celebrate our month-long learning about pollinators, plants and our life science unit.  Thank you for sending in a t-shirt for this activity.

Now that it's June we will develop our outdoor garden to plant our pollinator garden!  We will hopefully welcome the butterflies, bats, bees and birds to our RMCS community.
